Detailed rules for the Implementation of the Pilot Regulation on Shanghai Municipal Government Scholarships for International Students at Shanghai International Studies University

 

Chapter One   General Regulations

(1)   The following fine print of the regulation is specially made in an effort to further the development of the international students’ education, to expand the scale and improve the level, to support and encourage more outstanding international students and scholars to study in our university, and to better scholarship evaluation and selection procedures in the spirit of “The Pilot Regulation on Shanghai Municipal Government Scholarships for International Students at Shanghai International Studies University”.

(2)    The assessment of the SISU international student scholarships is carried out under the principle of “openness, fairness and justness”.

 

Chapter Two   Category of Scholarship and Member Distributions

(3)    In 2016, 20 international student (s) will be granted the Class A Shanghai Municipal Government Scholarship in our university, in a reward for their / his having applied for study for Master's Degree or Doctoral Degree in SISU in the year. The Class A scholarship covers tuition and accommodation fee during the regular year of study, and provides fees of insurance against serious diseases and accidents. Besides, the scholarship of living cost is given out every month, to postgraduate students RMB 3000 per month, and to PhD students RMB3500 per month.

(4)   In 2016, about 10 Class B Shanghai Municipal Government scholarships will be granted to international students in our university, in a reward for their having applied for undergraduate study in SISU in the year. The Class B scholarship covers tuition fee during the regular year of study and fees of the basic learning materials.

(5) From 2016, Class C Shanghai Municipal Government scholarships was cancelled.

Chapter Three Scholarship Conditions and Application Procedures

(6)   Please refer to Annex 1 for more details concerning qualifications and procedures for Class A Shanghai Municipal Government scholarship for international students.

(7)   Please refer to Annex 2 for more details concerning qualifications and procedures for Class B Shanghai Municipal Government scholarship for international students.

(8)  Please refer to Annex 3 for more details concerning qualifications and procedures for Class C Shanghai Municipal Government scholarship for international students.
 (9) Application for Class A or Class B Shanghai Municipal Government scholarships for international students commences on April 1st and ends on May 15th each year.

(10) Application for Class C Shanghai Municipal Government scholarship for international students is accepted at the end of each semester, the concrete date will be notified otherwise.

 

Chapter Four    Scholarship Assessment and Verification

(11)  Applicants should submit the application materials directly or mail them to the Office of International Student Affairs (OISA). The materials are to be sent to the related colleges and departments after the verification of the applicant’s qualifications and conditions by OISA.
 (12)  After the colleges or departments make comments, the applicants’ list and their materials are to be sent back to OISA for recollection within due time.

(13)  The Evaluation Committee of the International Student Scholarship of SISU makes evaluations of the applicants’ materials provided by OISA, organizes interviews if necessary, and makes final decisions on the scholarship winners.

(14)  The list of the scholarship winners is to be published on the website of OISA of SISU at http://oisa.shisu.edu.cn.  For Class A & Class B scholarships, the result is published in late June or early July each year and for Class C, it's at the end of each semester.

(15)  The Scholarship winners should make registrations and claim the scholarships according to the time regulated by the university. Otherwise, they are considered as relinquishing the claim to the scholarship automatically. The university will cease to offer the scholarship to the students for self or compulsory dismissal since the day of the dismissal.

(16) The Class A & Class B scholarship status must be annually assessed according to “Measures on the Annual Review for Shanghai Municipal Government Scholarship Status”. Only students passed the assessment are eligible for the scholarships of the following academic year.

(17) The Assessment Committee of the International Student Scholarship of Shanghai International Studies University is entitled for explanation of these regulations.
 

Annex 1:     

Details for Application for the Class A Scholarship
(Full scholarship)
The Class A scholarship is to provide pecuniary aid for outstanding international students for graduate study in Shanghai. Contingent upon passing the Annual Review assessment, Class A scholarship winners gain the full scholarship during the study stages, including tuition fee, living allowance and insurance against serious diseases and accidents.

1. Application Time
Application time is from April 1 to May 15 each year.

2. Applicants’ Qualifications
(1) Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens and be in good health.
(2) Educational background and age limit:
Applicants for Doctoral degree program must have master’s degree and be under the age of 40.

Applicants for Master's degree program must have a bachelor’s degree and be under the age of 35. 
(3) The applicant must have outstanding academic achievements.
(4) The applicant must have no other Chinese Government scholarships at the same time.

3. Coverage and standard of the scholarship
Class A scholarship (full scholarship) covers the following:
(1) Tuition fee.
(2) Living allowance.

--The basic accommodation is provided.

--Monthly living allowance for Master’s degree students is CNY 3,000.

--Monthly living allowance for Doctoral degree students is CNY 3,500.

(3)Insurance against serious diseases and accidents is also provided.

4. Application Procedure

Step 1: Complete the application for admission to postgraduate programs of Shanghai International Studies University.  For details, please click   (http://oisa.shisu.edu.cn/Default.aspx?tabid=494)

Step 2: Submit the following documents in duplicate by post or in person before the application deadline.

(1) Log on to the Shanghai Government Scholarship website at http://www.study-shanghai.org, set up an individual account, fill in the Shanghai Government Scholarship Application form online, print it out and sign it;

(2) Personal Statement: it should contain application reasons, family financial condition, education background, academic and work performance, awards, personal specialties etc., with a minimum of 1500 words/characters in English/Chinese.

Notes:  A valid e-mail address is required for good contact.

             The application materials will not be returned in any case.

Annex 2:

Details for Application for the Class B Scholarship
(Partial scholarship)

The Class B scholarship is to provide pecuniary aid for outstanding international students for degree programs in Shanghai. Contingent upon passing the Annual Review assessment, Class B scholarship winners are exempted from the tuition fee during the study stages.

1. Application Time
Application time is from April 1 to May 15 each year.

2. Applicant’s qualifications
(1) Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens and be in good health.
(2) Educational background and age limit:
Applicants for Undergraduate program must be a high school graduate under the age of 25. 

Applicants for Master's degree program must have a bachelor’s degree and be under the age of 35. 

Applicants for Doctoral degree program must have master’s degree and be under the age of 40.


(3) The applicant must have outstanding academic achievements.
(4) The applicant must have no other Chinese Government scholarships at the same time.

3. Coverage and standard of the scholarship 
Class B scholarship winners are exempted from tuition fee and
Insurance fee (Insurance against serious diseases and accidents) in the corresponding academic year.

4. Application Procedure

Annex 3:

Details for Application for the Class C Scholarship   (Cancelled)

(The Outstanding Student Scholarship)

The Class C scholarship (the outstanding student scholarship) is to honor outstanding international students who are attending long-term programs in institutions of higher education in Shanghai. Class C scholarship winners can gain one-off subsidy for every school year.

1. Application Time
Application time is at the end of each semester. The concrete date will be notified otherwise (degree students can only apply at the end of each spring semester).

2. Applicant’s qualifications
(1) Applicants must be international students who have been attending long-term programs in Shanghai International Studies University for at least one semester with no suspension during the previous semester and no other Chinese Government scholarship. 
 (2) Applicants must abide by the laws and rules of Chinese Government, observe school principles and regulations, and comply with the academic arrangement by the school.
(3) Applicants must have clear goals of study, be diligent and hardworking with outstanding academic achievements.
(4) Applicants must take an active part in public activities and social practice organized by Shanghai local communities or SISU.
3. Coverage and standard of the scholarship 
Class C scholarship winners gain the scholarship in lump-sum, from RMB 4000 to RMB 6000. 
4. Application materials.
The applicant must fill in the application form truly and hand in the following materials:
(1) “Class C scholarship application form” (
http://oisa.shisu.edu.cn/Default.aspx?tabid=855), filled in Chinese or English.
(2) The school academic record (GPA) of the previous semester.
(3) A copy of passport. 
(4) Certificate or proof of taking part in public activities and social practice.

Application materials will not be returned in any case.
