Introduction to Chinese Visa

1. Residence permit: Foreigners studying in Shanghai for a period of 6 months or more should apply for the residence permit through the school within 30 days of entry. If the residence permit, passport number and residential address of a foreign resident permit holder are changed, a new residence permit shall be applied through the school within 10 days。

The extension of the residence permit for foreigners is usually 30 days in advance, the process takes up to 7 working days。

Foreigners applying for the residence permit for the first time require a medical report, which is not required when applying for extension。

Foreigners should pay attention to the expiry date of the residence permit. The punishment of overstaying the residence permit starts with a fine of 500 RMB for every day of overstaying and in more serious cases it could reach deportation。

2. Foreigners studying in China for a period of less than 6 months may apply for X2 visa. The visa could be extended to a maximum duration of 180 days depending on their studying duration。

Internship

According to the Provisions of Shanghai Municipal Entry – Exit Administration, foreign students in all Shanghai universities are required to apply for internship registration procedure on their residence permit in accordance with the school’s off-campus internship activities engaged in their teaching plan. The process is as follows:

1. Students shall submit their study plan to the Office of International Students Affairs

2. After the examination and approval, students shall carry the “Foreign Students Teaching Practice Unit Guidance Submission” to the internship unit to affix the confirmation seal

3. Submit the above-mentioned “submissions” to the Office of International Students Affairs, and then send the internship conformation to the Entry - Exit Administration of Shanghai for filing

4. After 8 working days, students can obtain a copy of the Foreign Students Teaching Practice Certificate and the letter of registration

5. Students shall submit their passport, the copy of “Foreign Students Teaching Practice Certificate” and the “Temporary Residence Registration Form” to the Entry - Exit Administration Bureau to obtain an Internship Residence Permit。

Attention:

1. The cost of an independent internship fee is 200RMB each time. If processed at the same time with the residence permit, the internship fee gets free of charge depending of the residence permit fee。

2. After completing the formalities and the corresponding registration, foreign students can be engage in off-campus internship activities。

Visa FAQ

Student applying for the first time for the residence permit need to provide:

(1)Admission Letter issued by the school;

(2)Admission Notice or Proof of Enrollment Letter;

(3)Original and photocopy of the Registration Form of Temporary Residence;

(4)Valid Physical Examination Report;

(5)1 Passport photo 2 inch (5cm x 4cm);

(6)Original and photocopy of passport.


Landing visa can’t be converted to student visa. If you have a landing visa entry you shall leave the country within the valid period and apply again for visa to re-enter.


X1 visa is valid for 30 days only; please you shall register at the school as soon as possible and apply for the residence permit within the validity period of your visa. X2 visa is valid for a period of less than 6 month, it allows you to stay and study in China within the validity period of your visa.


The residence certificate allows foreigners to legally reside for a long term, study and travel back and forth as many times as possible within its validity period.


Students holding X1 visa shall apply for a residence permit within 30 days. Holders of X2 visa entry, where their stay will exceed 3 months and will include traveling out of the country, shall apply for a residence permit within the validity period of the visa. Students holding a visa other than X1 or X2 visa entry can’t use the visa to study in the university, however, they shall as soon as possible apply for residence permit for students.


The validity period of the residence certificate is usually based on the duration of the school’s studying period and the payment of your tuition fee, where each application does not exceed one year. You can apply for visa extension before the expiry of your residence certificate; however the period shall not exceed the school’s study plan.


To apply for X2 visa re-entry, the following materials are needed:

(1) Admission Letter issued by the school;

(2) Admission Notice or Proof of Enrollment Letter;

(3)Original and photocopy of passport;

(4)1 Passport photo 2 inch (5cm x 4cm);

(5)Original and photocopy of the Registration Form of Temporary Residence.

The Registration Form of Temporary Residence for Visitors is a certificate that proofs a foreigner legally resides in china. You shall complete your accommodation registration within 24 hours after arriving to China and obtain the Registration Form of Temporary Residence or else you shall face fines. In case of change of address, you shall apply for a new Registration Form of Temporary Residence with 24 hours of moving. 


 (1)If you live in a student dormitory or an off-campus hotel, the hostel or hotel will register for you. You can receive the "Registration Form of Temporary Residence" upon check-in at the front desk.

 (2)If you are renting an apartment or living at a friend’s place, you shall first go to the Office of International Students Affairs to receive a “registration form”, then carry it with the rental contract and your passport to a local police station and apply for “Registration Form of Temporary Residence for Visitors”.


If you have lost your passport, please contact the Office of International Students Affairs immediately. Under normal circumstance, you need to go through the following procedure:

(1)Report your passport lost to a local police station and go through all related procedure for a lost passport;

(2)Explain the situation to the Office of International Students Affai;

(3)Go through the relevant registration procedure at the Entry - Exit Administration of Shanghai Municipal;

(4)Apply for a new passport at the embassy of your country in China;

(5)As soon as you receive the new passport, prepare the visa application material at the Office of International Students Affairs;

(6)Apply for a new visa at Shanghai Entry – Exit Administration Bureau.

(7)Within 10 days after receiving the new passport, apply for Registration Form of Temporary Residence.

 

Please note that if you lose your passport, you should apply for a new visa within one month of reporting the lost of your passport at the Entry - Exit Administration Bureau. Use your lost passport report and your new passport to apply for a new visa. If you fail to receive the new passport within a month, you shall report again the lost passport at the Entry - Exit Administration Bureau within a month. If you fail to meet the deadline of applying for a new visa and re-report the lost passport, your visa will be regarded as an expired visa!


If your old passport is about to expire, please contact your embassy in China to apply for a new one, and make sure to go through the procedure of applying for a new visa at the International Student Affairs Office within 10 days after signing and issuing the new passport.

Please when going through the renewing procedure pay special attention to holding on to your old passport for future reference. If it was recalled by the embassy; please keep a photocopy of the photo page and the last visa!


The Chinese government is very strict when it comes to handling foreigner’s visas. Shall your visa reach its expiry date; you’ll be subjected to a fine of 500RMB a day and might rise to a maximum of 10,000 RMB. In serious cases, you will be detained or asked to leave the country.


Once your visa expires, please immediately report the matter to your The Office of International Students Affairs, then also report to a nearby Entry – Exit Administration Bureau and incur the penalty. Within the prescribed period, you shall go through the procedure of applying for a new visa at the Office of International Students Affairs.


If your parents, your wife /husband, or your child under 18 want to come to visit you and spend some time with you here in China, they shall apply for the Family Visit Visa. If there is a valid reason to stay in China after the expiration of the family visit visa, you shall apply for a family visit visa extension at the Entry- Exit Administration of Shanghai Municipal Bureau. Please contact your Students Affairs Office for specific details concerning your visa.


According to the Provisions of Entry – Exit Administration, any change concerning your stay in china such as changing your visa to a working visa, or any change in your passport number, marital status, home address (in case of moving), school (in case of transfer) in addition to other information, must be reported to Office of International Students Affairs to receive the documents for changing visa application. You shall then go through the changing visa procedure at the Entry – Exit Administration Bureau.
