Master in Global Communication

1)      PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The M.A. program teaches students’ comparative and systemic political/legal, economic, sociocultural, psychological, historical, technological and theoretical approaches to the globalization of communication through both legacy and digital media.

This program prepares its graduates for careers in a wide variety of locations and fields such as international journalism; multinational media and other corporations, including entertainment; international public relations and marketing/advertising for corporations, NGOs or governments, including health; public and other types of diplomacy; education; and other sites of globalization.

You will study at the School of Journalism and Communication, Shanghai International Studies University, one of the pioneers in global journalism teaching, global media practices and studies on global communication as well as global advertising and marketing practices in China.

The program offers a master’s degree in Global Communication. It also prepares students for doctoral programs in media (including publishing), international relations, international or intercultural communication and other areas. Skills emphasized include cross-cultural communication, critical and creative thinking, research and writing, innovation, public relations, and others.

 

2)      DURATION

This program is a two-year program. Most students can finish taking all the courses in the first year, do internship, and prepare MA thesis in the second year. If students fail to finish their learning tasks due to personal or specific reasons, they should make an application first and then extend their study after being approved. The length of extension is usually half a year, and no more than one year including suspending of schooling.

Students can also take any English-medium courses as electives either from School of Journalism and Communication or from other schools of the university.

4)      DISSERTATION REQUIREMENTS

Students must finish a dissertation of no less than 15,000 words in English with an abstract in both Chinese and English with no less than 1,000 characters. Dissertation should follow SISU Graduate Thesis Format Standard. School of Journalism and Communication, SISU, reserves the right of interpretation on this regulation.

 

5)      APPLICATION QUALIFICATIONS

Applications are open to non-Chinese citizens with reliable financial support and stability who are university graduates with a completed bachelor’s degree (transcript required) and in good health.

 

6)      ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY

Applicants must have a good command of English, with one of the following: TOEFL IBT (internet based) test result of at least 80 points, TOEFL (computer based) test result of at least 213 points, TOEFL (paper based) test result of at least 550 points, or IELTS test result of at least 6.0.

This requirement does not apply to an applicant who has studied for at least two years at, or received a degree from an English speaking high school, college, or university.

 

7)      ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

The Entrance Examination includes both a written and oral test, usually held in March, April or May. The SISU Graduate School via email communication will send out exact examination date and place arrangements (with an option for an on-line Skype interview in special cases).

 

8)   APPLICATION DEADLINE

May 15. Applicants for scholarships should follow the application regulation of scholarships.
